Tryptique: Le Sacre d’Enheduanna

While researching an open call for ceramicists on the theme of “Primitivism”, I found myself perplexed. Once again, unconscious biases were at play: the primitive, irrational collective, spiritual art opposed to the individual heroic, philosophically inspired male/real art. Yet, interestingly, writing on clay was a very normal human practice for many centuries. And, what is less known is that most certainly the first author whose existence we can trace through archaeology, long before Homer (whose own existence remains debated) was a WOMAN. Her writings, verses, incantations were copied by generations of scribes learning to write on clay tablets. Her name is Enheduanna. In honoring HER, I reclaimed her place in History, engraving four significant verses of her masterwork, “The Exaltation of Innana”, on clay tablets, echoing the medium she herself used in life.
